The Basilisa three seater, designed by Ito Kish, showcases the solihiya, an intricate weave that is both functional and decorative. Inspired by the designer's grandmother, this design pays homage to the traditional Filipino craft of weaving. The Basilisa lounge is not only a piece of furniture but also a work of art that tells a story of heritage and craftsmanship.
The unique strength of the Basilisa lies in its use of rattan, a sustainable material that adds both support and aesthetic drama to the design. Each weave showcases a different pattern, but they all come together to create an exquisite play of light, pattern, and shadow. This chiaroscuro effect is what makes the Basilisa a true Filipino beauty to behold.
All the materials used in the Basilisa lounge have been sourced from sustainable means of production. The kiln-dried mahogany, a fast-growing hardwood, and the rattan are both farmed and sourced locally in the Philippines. The weaving was done by artisans in small neighborhoods, providing them with livelihood and preserving the traditional craft.
The Basilisa three seater measures 1752.6 mm x 609.6 mm x 812.8 mm, making it a comfortable and stylish addition to any living space. Its design is a result of extensive research, exploring different weave patterns found in fabrics, tribal art, and traditional baskets from various parts of the Philippines.
The journey of creating the Basilisa was not without its challenges. Identifying the weaves that could work together harmoniously and finding skilled artisans to execute the solihiya weave proved to be a hurdle. However, the dedication and passion of the design team, led by Ito Kish and Aikay Tablac, overcame these obstacles and brought the Basilisa to life.
The Basilisa three seater has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014, a prestigious accolade that celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This award recognizes the Basilisa's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
The Basilisa is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines and the artistry of its people. With its intricate solihiya weave and sustainable materials, this design embodies the essence of Filipino craftsmanship and innovation.
